الملخّص

Matricaria pubescens is an aromatic plant endemic to South Algeria. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-cholinesterase and anti-diabetic activity of M. pubescens essential oils (MPEOs) and to correlate the activity with their chemical composition. The analysis of essential oils was conducted using GC-MS. One of the main components identified was α-pinene, ranging from 9.85% to 20.46%, along with D-limonene at 2.52-5.62%, and β-ocimene at 18.99-35.52%. Significant inhibitory activity was detected and considered potent as cholinesterase inhibitor (Acetylcholinesterase IC50 = 13.91 ± 1.14 μg/mL and butyrylcholinesterase IC50 = 11.25 to 20.01 μg/mL). Also, MPEOs exhibited the ability as a potent inhibitors of α-glucosidase (IC50 = 50.07 ± 3.71 μg/mL) and α-amylase (IC50 = 12.96 ± 0.51 μg/mL). This study demonstrated that MPEOs may provide a new alternative source of antidiabetic and anti-Alzheimer’s activities and that further experiments are needed to investigate the main active compounds.
