Professor MacDonald Idu is a Professor of Phytomedicine, in the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, University of Benin, Nigeria. He received his B.Sc., and M.Sc in Botany from the University of Benin and University of Lagos. PhD in Biosystematics from the University of Benin. He joined the Federal University of Technology, Yola in 1992 as an Assistant Lecturer and the University of Benin as Lecturer I in 1995. He rose through academic and administrative ranks to the position of full Professor in 2002. As a senior academic, professor, and mentor, he has supervised and directed several projects leading to the awards of First degree, Masters and Doctorate degrees. His research activities have taken him to several countries around the world where he took part in international conferences, workshops, seminars and courses. He has served as an external examiner, external assessor and in interview panels for appointments and promotions in various universities in Nigeria, South Africa, and India. Prof. Idu has to his credit 6 books, 5 chapters in books and over 300 journal articles mainly in international journals of repute. He is an International registered Alternative Medicine Practitioner. At other times he was the Dean, Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences and Vice-Chancellor, Benson Idahosa University, Dean of Students, Director ICT and External Linkages. University of Benin, Head of Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology. He is a member of several Academic Societies: Life Member, Association for Plant Taxonomy, Botanical Society of Nigeria; Member, American Botanical Council, American Society of Botany, Society for Medicinal Plant Research, Germany, Innovation and Technology Network, Association for African Medicinal Plants Standards and several others. He is a Fellow of several bodies: Fellow, Society of Ethnobotany, Fellow, Linnean Society of London, Fellow, Royal Society of Biology, London, Fellow, International Science Congress Association, Fellow, Institute of Strategic Management; Fellow, Institute of Public Managers, Member, Nigerian Institute of Management. He is a proud recipient of – African Health Icons Award, 2009 and 2012; S.K. Jain Medal for Ethnobotany, 2012 and Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Benin Alumni Association (UBAA) Worldwide and other many Awards/Prizes. He was a Member of the Presidential Initiative Committee on the commercialisation of Medicinal Plants in Nigeria. Consultant to The Fedral Ministry of Health, on TCAM, Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency. Technical consultant to Artemisinine Development Company Limited-Abuja and Technical Chairman Nigerian Medicinal Development Company, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Abuja. Consultant to Delta State – Ministry of Science and Technology. He is married to Prof. (Mrs.) Faustina K. Idu, Optometry Department of the University of Benin and blessed with two wonderful Children.
